AuctionAds, improving one day at a time!
Throughout the past couple of weeks, we have been working closely with Commission Junction to ensure that reporting was in sync with their records and our records. Last weekend, we unfortunately had some issues with the server network that operates and publishes the ads, so some of you may have noticed your ads with no thumbnails or bids. We are sorry about that. We fixed the problem as fast as we could identify it.
This transition from one set of hands to the next has been a long journey, but we are glad that you have stuck with us. We have been working day and night to get this service back to where it once was. We want, more than anything, for this service to be a huge success and for it to really benefit you, our publishers. We are working on new features, new ad blocks, and trying to expand functionality on a daily basis. We have a committed development team working together to pin point any issues, resolve them, and get the system back on track.
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to you, our publishers, the reason we are even continuing this service, and want to thank you for sticking with it. We know there have been some issues, we know there have been some downfalls, we know that there have been click-tracking issues, but please rest assured that you ensure that you get paid for every cent you earn. Thanks again!

The New & Improved AuctionAds.com
AuctionAds Publishers,
We are excited to announce some big improvements to our service today! We are working hard to make AuctionAds the best ad system with the best publisher service available. Here are the new features and improvements you will notice:
New "Web 2.0" Ad Creative's: Login to your account and go to the "Get Code" page. You will notice a sleek new ad design with multiple color schemes to choose from that we think will increase click-through rates to your ads (which will result in you earning more money).
Optimized Ad Images: Our ad code is now optimized so that the auction images are no longer stretched or distorted. This makes for a cleaner ad appearance and should also improve clicks. (Note: This feature will become fully available as the cache updates over the next few days.)
Better Ad Network Performance: We have doubled the size of our hardware infrastructure and optimized it to ensure near 100% uptime of ad serving (and to make sure your ads are served lighting fast).
AuctionAds.com has a Brand New Look! Stop by and check out our new design of AuctionAds.com where you will notice a cleaner look and feel that’s fun and easy to use!
This is just the start of improvements that you will see from AuctionAds over the coming weeks. We look forward to servicing you and working closely with you to build the best ad system on the Internet. Your feedback is always welcome!
Thanks,
Patrick Gavin

What has Roy been up to?
Readers, I know this blog has been dead for over two months and that is long enough! We have been busy these last two months mapping out the direction for ReviewMe moving forward. We have two very cool announcements happening in the coming days.
1. A brand new product that will revolutionize the paid blogging model. This should be out to the public this Tuesday with a little luck.
2. A promotion that will do a lot of good for some great charities. Thinking July 18th on this one but if you are familiar with development schedules this date is a crap shoot.
I know these are very vague updates but I got to keep our competition guessing ;)

Should you leave the AuctionAds borders or blend them?
We have seen many AuctionAds publishers removing borders from our AuctionAds ad units, mimicking the popular Google AdSense optimization feature of removing borders to blend the ads within a site better.
Did you know that leaving the borders turned on might actually lead to a higher click through rather than a lower one? With our AuctionAds showing an image along with the text part of the ads, using borders can help define them, as well as help visitors quickly tell which picture goes with which text description.
Not sure which version if the best one for you? If you have an ad serving system, such as phpAdsNew, set up two channels in your AuctionAds account, and create two variations of your ad unit, one with borders and the other blended. Rotate them 50/50 for a couple of days and see which ad unit style has the highest CTR - is it the one with borders or without? Then chose that one as your standard ad unit style throughout the site. You can also use this to test out colors as well.
Don't have an ad serving system on your site? You can do a quick and dirty version of the same by manually swapping the styles each day, and after swapping for a few, see which has the highest CTR. This won't be as accurate, since daily variations in traffic can affect your stats, but it is a way to workaround if you cannot use an adserver.
If you do your own ad unit style testing, be sure to report back the findings of your testing, being sure to include the ad unit size and whether borders or blended was the best for you.

AuctionAds June Spotlight Publisher of the Month - GetUSB.info
Ever wondered what kind of cool USB devices there actually are that go beyond the standard wireless mouse or USB phone charger? Wonder no more, because they can all be found at the site of the AuctionAds publisher of the month, GetUSB.info.
Greg Morris started a USB website because he was already hunting down new USB products daily, so it wasn’t much of a stretch to begin turning those findings into a popular USB product blog. What started as an online experiment to better educate himself on blogging and internet turned into a profitable experience too.
Greg started the site back in January 2006, and has used programs such as Google AdSense, Commission Junction, BlogAds, Chitika, among others, and found that USB ads just weren’t paying enough… especially Google AdSense ads, which were low in per click revenue. Greg added AuctionAds back in March, and found that because there is so much USB inventory at eBay, that “the commissions are much higher thus making AuctionAds the more profitable partner for generating revenue.”
“AuctionAds is currently my favorite advertising method. I believe it's a combination of site content in conjunction with an excellent tool for generating ads. The beautiful thing about AuctionAds is the fresh content served up. You eliminate advertising blindness because what eBay serves up is A) consistently different with almost every page view and with B) different images, prices and descriptions. This is excellent because even with return visitors at GetUSB.info they always see something new for sale,” Greg says.
He has found that using four standard variations of USB combination keywords works best on the Wordpress-based site. “On each page there are four ads running of AuctionAds. Each ad uses different key words. The combination of the 4 different key words along with the different content served up from AuctionAds makes for a very fresh list of products on every page view. It's great that AuctionAds gives the web-owner the tools to create custom Ads for each page yet at the same time developed a product powerful enough to work when standardized. I've also started paying more attention to upcoming events, holidays etc and use that to my advantage and edit some AuctionAds on a week by week basis.”
Thinking about starting your own blog? We asked Greg to give advice to others who are just starting out and looking for a way to make money through blogging. “There are many tips and tricks I'd like to give. The most important is being consistent and posting on a regular basis - but everyone says that (although it's true). Let me give you a tid-bit which isn't mentioned that often - but valuable. I find unique sites that present content in a unique way and read their blog just to learn their method on how to present information. From how they phrase things, to using the block quotes, to emphasizing a certain point by incorporating off beat links/events to drive a point home. Very few bloggers/webmasters are training or educated in writing so this is a good way to learn what works.”
Have you ever done a search for anything USB related? If you have, you have seen Greg’s tips in action, as chances are good you have stumbled across one of his GetUSB.info blog post in the process, as the site ranks on the first page for most searches related to USB gadgets it has featured on the GetUSB.info blog, including the USB Circus Cannon which is currently his favorite USB gadget of the moment, with foam darts he can fire around his office using laptop controls. So next time you are thinking of searching for anything USB or are looking for that quirky USB toy, think of GetUSB.info

Making Money With AuctionAds Referrals
Did you realize that you can make money when visitors click on your “Ads by AuctionAds” link in your ad unit? AuctionAds offers a unique referral program where you will earn a percentage of all your referred publishers, meaning you can make a nice additional tidy sum of referral revenue on top of the money you make from the actual ads themselves.
Ever click on the “Ads by ___” link on some of the other ad programs? If you did, you would discover a landing page that would get new signups or advertisers for those programs but would leave the publisher high and dry when it comes actually getting any credit or revenue from those those signups. And not only are you not earning any money from those referrals, it is also a non-money-making leak where visitors can leave your site without you making a penny off of them. This is one area where AuctionAds strives to be different.
With AuctionAds, we don’t want you to worry about the loss of revenue caused by the branding we use to identify the ad units as ads on your site. So we have implemented a referral program that is imbedded right into your ad units. So anytime anyone clicks on the “Ads by AuctionAds” and signs up for the program, you will earn 2% of those new publisher’s earnings. Pretty sweet deal. This means every single click made from our ad units, even the clicks on the “Ads by AuctionAds” gives you the potential to earn money.
Do you have other ways you wish to promote AuctionAds outside of the ad unit itself? You can also generate referral links that do not have to appear in conjunction with your ad unit, so you can just include a link in your blog entry talking about AuctionAds, or include it in a sidebar of a blog or website. Just login to your account and you will find the code right on the front page.
And with AuctionAds being such a new program, chances are good that if a visitor likes your new revenue stream on your site, they just might click that link and sign up themselves. And since nearly all of those signups would have clicked on the links to see how they worked, you will still earn money from that signup if they also end up placing an eBay bid as well!
Wondering just how many people you have already referred to AuctionAds? The front page of your AuctionAds account shows the number of referrals you currently have, so you can see how many people have signed up using your link. And soon, you will also be able to login to your account and see your referral reporting separated out from your regular earnings, so you will be able to see just how much money you are making from your AuctionAds ads versus strictly the referral revenue. If you tend to send a lot of referrals, this will be especially handy for you.
Ready to start earning referral revenue from AuctionAds? Either use AuctionAds ad units, if you aren’t already, or simply login to your account to generate the referral javascript so you can create regular links for AuctionAds and start earning right away.

BuddyTV - AuctionAds Publisher Spotlight For May
Ever wonder what you get when you cross a high traffic site with everyone’s obsession with shows like Lost, Heroes & Grey’s Anatomy? You get the perfect site for running AuctionAds.
The pop-culture site Buddy TV launched in October 2005 and with a great staff of writers passionate about anything and everything that appears on television, BuddyTV has become a destination for fans of just about every television show airing in the United States. And it is no wonder, the site is bursting with the latest news, recaps and spoilers of all your favorites.
BuddyTV first began running AuctionAds on April 9th and immediately saw the results. The first week or so was a bit slower, as can be expected anytime any new advertising is started. But, they allowed it time to work and discovered it ramped up much higher than their initial first week.
For BuddyTV, they chose a placement that saw them replacing one of their Google AdSense ad units on the page. They selected a 728x90 ad unit site and placed it below the fold.
If you are immediately wondering why AuctionAds would do so well on a site where you’d think the primary item for sale on each television show would be DVDs, think again. A quick search for Grey’s Anatomy shows over 400 auctions, with items ranging from posters to magazines, watches to signed scripts. When there are so many unique fan items for sale on eBay from each show, it is no wonder that fans are clicking on the AuctionAds advertisements.
They have also discovered that AuctionAds is a perfect compliment to other on-page advertising that BuddyTV utilizes. In addition to AuctionAds, BuddyTV also outsources some ad sales as well as using ad networks including Google AdSense, Ad.com and Tribal Fusion .
So while BuddyTv has seen great success with AuctionAds, how did this pop culture site become successful itself? According to Andy Liu, co-founder of BuddyTV, a definite part comes from ensuring their site meets the desires of their audience.
“We’re very passionate about building usable and fun sites utilizing our experience based on our experience, I think we’ve built the best TV fan sites out there in terms of content, usability, and ultimately the fun
factor.”
When building a site with an eye on eventually earning money through on-page advertising, Andy has several tips for publishers that some tend to overlook when they are too focused on the immediate dollar signs.
“Although we’re still early in our development as a major publishing site, we’ve found that being consistent every day with relevant posts even if you think it’s not driving much traffic is extremely important in
building awareness in the users’ mind that your site is important enough to visit everyday.”
“I think developing a unique voice is also very important, you can expect to have straight-up talk about a specific episode being poor while at the same time being a fan of the show at BuddyTV. For example, we’ll be honest when we feel a specific episode of 24 or Lost really lacked direction or plot development, yet at the same time we’re huge fans of the show. Transparency is always a good thing.”
Over the years, BuddyTV has seen multiple incarnations, and they have more plans for the future to keep up with what their visitors want from the site as well. Andy considers this one of the most important aspects of building their business. “Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, always be listening to your users and push the envelope on developing features that
improve user experience. We’ve gone through several iterations of BuddyTV and we’re still iterating, our product roadmap is filled with things we want to do and our users want. By delivering the experience your users want, you’ll always be on the right track.”
AuctionAds is pleased to have BuddyTV as our May Publisher of the Month. Think you have what it takes to be an upcoming AuctionAds Publisher of the Month? Tell us why and you just might be featured in an upcoming month.

Interview with Loren Baker from Search Engine Journal
Loren Baker from Search Engine Journal has been doing a SEO site clinic which has been helping website owners increase their traffic, rankings and links. Because of this I decided to do a short interview with him:
What is Search Engine Journal's benefit from doing a SEO site clinic?
Search Engine Journal benefits by helping the SEO community and companies which are starting their initial SEO by total transparency. We are working together, with our co-authors and guest contributors as a team to offer SEO advice to not only the sites which we have accepted into the SEO Clinic project but also the readers of our column who are working on their SEO. For example, when doing an SEO Clinic for a WordPress powered blog, our goal is that numerous WordPress bloggers will benefit from our SEO recommendations.
Our Resident SEO Pimps benefit via expanded recognition of their expertise and services to the SEO community. I think that it would be easy to charge anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 in consulting fees for such SEO oriented information and recommendation, but our ultimate mission is to help smaller sites and charities which cannot afford such SEO consultancy fees. In essence, such transparency should benefit the SEO and search marketing community as a whole.
How popular are your SEO clinics? Are they heavily linked to?
These posts have become quite popular throughout the SEO industry and the searchosphere. Many blogs and informational sites have linked to our SEO Clinic pieces, and our hope is that for each Clinic we provide, more sites which fall into the categories of our Clinic "patients" and link to the recommendations.
Do you have any recommendations for bloggers or website owners who looking to increase their links?
In each SEO Clinic, to date, we have discussed ideas for sites, such as TechSmith.com and BigOceans.com to attract links. In essence, the SEO Clinic will attract links to our patients from SEO blogs which cover the free SEO Clinic advice, but in each clinic we provide recommendations to improve links via building relationships with blogs in the niche categories our patients appeal to, and via social media marketing via Digg.com, StumbleUpon and other major traffic and inherent link building avenues.

New Window Targeting Option
After much demand, we've added the option of opening a new window when a visitor clicks an AuctionAd. This is optional, as some ad blocking software will block any kind of popup. To use it, go into your Get Code page, and check the "Open in New Window" checkbox. To add to existing code, add this to your code:
auctionads_options = "n";
We hope this makes AuctionAds an even better fit for those who choose to use the option!

Optimizing Before You Purchase Links
There are many ways to increase a sites ranking such as purchasing text links, but it seems that people are forgetting the basics. Before you purchase text links I would make sure you have optimized your website for the search engines. Here are the most common mistakes that I see:
Meta Description - Although meta tags don't seem important you would be surprised at how much a unique meta description tag on each page of a website can do to your rankings. You can try stuffing them with keywords to see if it helps, but I recommend tailoring each description to accurately represent the content on each page.
Sitemap - You want to make sure that your web pages are getting indexed by the search engines. If your content does not get indexed how do you expect the search engines to rank it? Using a simple sitemap structure can work well for you if you have a small to medium sized website.
Robots.txt - Most people think that the more pages you have indexed, the more traffic you will receive. In many cases this is not true; by removing duplicate content from the search engines you can actually increase your traffic.
URL strings - A lot of people use content management systems which make their URLs look all funny with extraneous characters. Clean up your URLs, the difference is like night and day.
Code - By using clean and compliant code you can keep your website search engine friendly. You can use basic code elements such as headings or alt tags to help improve your rankings.
There is nothing wrong with purchasing text links, but before you do, I recommend you cover the basics. If you do not do the basics then you will not be getting the most from the text links you purchase.

New URL Converter and Referral Counter
We're hard at work adding new features and improving AuctionAds. First up is a handy URL converter. This lets you convert any eBay URL into an AuctionAds link. You can use it to link to a your auctions or link to that funny auction you found. Any time you'd use an eBay link, run it through the URL converter and make some money.
Another small feature that many people asked for is a referral count on your Account page. You ask, we deliver.

Blog Consistently
Ever since blogging has gained in popularity people have debated about the optimal number of posts you should be posting. There are those that say if you post too little you will lose your readers and those that say if you post too much you will overwhelm them and also lose your readers. Is there a magic number of posts you should be writing everyday?
I have a completely different take on it, and I'm not necessarily saying I'm right because there are so many factors for a blogger to consider. But the way I see it is that the most important thing is that you're consistent. I believe that once you set the expectations for your readers, you need to be consistent.
If your blog readers are used to you only posting once a week then I don't think you will lose any subscribers by not blogging enough. On the other hand if you write five blog posts per day and then all of the sudden cut back to a couple posts per week it is more likely that you will start to lose your audience.
So instead of worrying about finding the magic number of posts to write just be consistent and give your readers what they have grown to expect.

When Do You Post to Your Blog?
Michael Gray from Wolf Howl had an interesting post about what time of day do you post to your blog. One thing that I like to keep in mind when posting is that readers probably have hundreds of options in their feed reader, but the amount of blog posts in their reader decreases over weekends drastically. So if you start posting on the weekends, there is a good chance that you will start gaining new readers because when they can't find anything else that's interesting to read they will at least be able to read your blog post.
Keep your posting schedule the same for a few weeks but also start posting on the weekends. Do this for a month and you should see good growth from it.

AuctionAds Launches!
Readers, we are excited to announce the launch of AuctionAds! This is a joint venture between ShoeMoney Media and MediaWhiz (TLA's parent company). AuctionAds is a simple to use, creative implementation of Ebay's affiliate program. You can see a live example of these ads on the left margin of this blog.
AuctionAds also allows website owners to make more money than going direct to Ebay's program because we will be leveraging our scale against Ebay's tiered payout system. We also have baked an affiliate program right into the ads so if anyone clicks on your "Ads By AuctionAds" link on your ads and signs up, you stand to make a percentage of their revenues. Try AuctionAds out and let me know below what you think, thx!

AuctionAds Launch
ShoeMoneyMedia Group Inc. and MediaWhiz Holdings are proud to announce the launch of AuctionAds. AuctionAds provides publishers a new way to monetize their traffic by using the eBay affilaite program.
Why use AuctionAds? - AuctionAds is a one stop shop for international and domestic website owners. AuctionAds provides a very simple way to let webmasters tap into the extremely lucrative eBay affiliate program without needing any programing skills. Its really as simple as copy and paste.
What is the revenue split with publishers? - AuctionAds is purely focused on growth and because of that we are paying out 100% of revenue to our publishers. We are well funded and are not concerned with making a profit in initial stages. In the future we will evaluate and possibly make some changes. The goal of course is to provide the user with the most profitable solution and have a profitable company at the same time. Fortunately, that is possible. As AuctionAds grows so does our volume and ability to leverage higher payouts.

"SeoClass" launches hands on SEO seminars in NYC
LBB Readers, a very talented group of search marketers has just announced SeoClass which will be a series of hands on seo workshops to be held in NYC. Michael Gray just announced details of the workshops on his blog here. The class is put on by a great group of folks including: Jeremy Schoemaker, Rae Hoffman, Todd Malicoat, Greg Niland, and Michael Gray.
I think these smaller workshops are the best settings for site owners to get great instruction and the rare opportunity to ask specific questions about their unique site situation which is key. I am also looking forward to catching up with these guys now that TLA is out in NYC! Get more information on SeoClass here.

Don't Lose Your Blog Readers
Darren Rowse from ProBlogger posted a great list of 34 reasons why people unsubscribe from your blog. Darren asked his readers their thoughts on why they unsubscribe from blogs, over 109 people commented and Darren classified all the responses and posted the data.
There are definitely some really interesting reasons why people will unsubscribe from a blog. If you're a blogger, I would consider reading this post and then reading it again to make sure that you're not losing your audience for any of these reasons.
We all spend so much effort building an audience that it's critical we lose as few readers as possible. Similar to the business saying where it's cheaper to keep existing customers rather than finding new ones.

Purchasing .edu Links
A few days ago I wrote How to Build Trusted Links, which caused a few people to email me about purchasing .edu links. There are a lot of companies that sell .edu links, but most of the links will be on student blogs and not the actual university website. Although this can still build trust, search engines are quite complex and can probably tell the difference between .edu links from student blogs and links from the actual university website. So before you purchase links from .edu sites make sure you know what pages they are going to be placed on because ones from the actual university site will probably create more trust.

Guide to buying links
Loren Baker from Search Engine Journal wrote a great guide to buying links, directory listings, and paid reviews for blogs. Loren does a great job of breaking down all the different vendors that sell links, paid reviews, and directory listings. Loren also covers tips for purchasing links from these sources.
Here is what he had to say about Text Link Ads and ReviewMeâText Link Ads is probably the most popular of the link ad companies, with over 10,000 publishers in their network and a lot of promotions and advertising on SEO and publisher industry blogs and sites. Link prices are based upon the authority of each site and charged per month.
ReviewMe is a more targeted approach to paid blogger reviews. Advertisers are given access to ReviewMeâs lists of niche publishers, and can request reviews on specific blogs (and only those blogs), instead of using the mass review approach. The end result is more thoughtful content and reviews of your products, for a higher price. Pricing is set per blog and based upon that blogâs popularity, readership and incoming links.

Building Links through Widgets
Links, links and links! That's what everyone is looking for so that they can increase their search engine rankings and traffic. Some people increase their links by purchasing them or even linkbaiting, but why not through widgets?
Widgets have been a hot topic for the last few months because they are a great source of links. Just think about all the blogs that use a flickr widget to show off their pictures. With over 1 million backward links according to Google it shows that widgets have been really effective for flickr.
If you want to increase your backward links through widgets
you have a few options:
You can create widgets for your website and distribute them. For example, Problogger lets readers put his content on their site through a simple widget.
Create widgets for popular services such as YouTube, Digg and flickr and distribute them through your website. This can be very effective because these services have large user bases who would love to use your widget. All you have to do is embed a link to your site within every widget.
Do you know of any other unique ways to increase your link popularity?

No More Top Diggers List
Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, has just announced that as of tomorrow they will take down the Top Diggers list in an attempt to slow down the gaming of Digg.
After considerable internal debate and discussion with many of those who make up the Top Digger list, we've decided to remove the list beginning tomorrow.
Even though Kevin says that this move was discussed with many Diggers that make up the Top Digger list I expect that this will upset quite a few of the active members. I personally know several people whom are top diggers and I can tell you this as much news to them as it is to you and I.
It is widely known that Digg can be a powerful resource for link building. A story that hits the homepage of Digg can often result in 500-1000 links to that site. This has made Digg very popular within the SEO community and because there are many people who can't write good enough content to make the homepage they resort to trying gaming the system.
What does this have to do with the story? Well many people have begun offering Top Diggers payment if they will submit their stories and many are even trying to buy powerful Digg accounts. So will this slow it down? I suppose it will a little bit but that comes at the expense of making the core user base of Digg upset. It will still not be hard to find out who the powerful Diggers are either, but it will slow a lot of people down
It will be interesting to see how the community reacts to this news. What do you think, will it upset the Diggers? Will this slow down the gaming of Digg?
